Relaxation Techniques

There are many different relaxation techniques, such as acupuncture and guided imagery, that help people cope with stress and other disorders. Many patients need to try a few different approaches to find one that fits them, and may need to try each technique more than once before giving up. General practitioners, alternative medicine providers and mental health professionals can all help you find the relaxation technique that works best for you.

Some relaxation techniques can be done by the patient at home or in other places. These techniques, such as breathing exercises, mediation, tai chi and yoga can be learned from books, videos or classes. They all require that the patient devote time daily for relaxation, a feat that may be hard for people who are busy working and taking care of families.

When stress suddenly hits, using visualization techniques, squeezing a stress ball, or breathing deep can be of great benefit. These techniques are usually used in conjunction with a home program that could include yoga or meditation. Energy work, massage and acupuncture are typically facilitated by another person that has been trained to help patients attain relaxation. Those that use these techniques may also practice at home, or they could participate in biofeedback or other psychological practices.

Some techniques can feel a bit awkward at first, especially if the patient isn't familiar with the concept behind the therapy. People could find it hard to concentrate at first, but if the patient persists, they will see that relaxation techniques do help. All people cannot benefit from every technique; for instance, if you don't like yoga, you won't focus on the practice and you won't attain the benefits it can offer.
